Notes: His wife, Sophia, was 44 and also described as a Caretaker & Postman. She was born in England. (On the 1901 census this was classed as The Post Office) In 1911 John and Sophia were living at 24, Prospect Hill, Redditch and John was still a postman. In 1891 John’s birthplace was given as Hawkesbury Upton, Gloucestershire and Sophia was born in Worcester, and John was a farm labourer. In 1881 John was an unemployed general labourer living in Bristol living with his first wife, Hannah, who died in 1885. An 1881 visitor was Sophia Agnes Cross, who like Hannah, was a ‘vest maker (tailor)’. She, née Martin, married James Cross (date of death unknown), in 1878 in Bristol, and John Carter in 1885 in the Droitwich, Worcestershire area. John Longden Carter died in 1930.
