Thomas E. was her son who was 41, born in Redditch, single and also living on his own means. Elizabet Boswell, aged 23, single and born in Wooten Wawen, Warwickshire, was the domestic servant. In 1851 Harriet’s husband, aged 30 and born in Redditch, had been a clerk. The family were living in Beoley Lane, Redditch. In 1861 William Field was a needle manufacturer, and William and Harriet were living in Beoley Road, Redditch. They (and Thomas) were still living in Beoley Road in 1871 and William was still a needle manufacturer. Thomas was a needle manufacturer’s assistant. In 1881 the three Fields were living in Headway, Ipsley, Warwickshire. William was a needle manufacturer. On the 1901 census Harriet was still living in Church Road but no number stated on the census. Presumably John was living in the Redditch Literary and Scientific Institute. In 1871 John was a Post Office messenger in Penkridge, Staffordshire. In 1881 John and Elizabeth were living in Prospect Road and John was described as a retired grocer. On the 1901 census they lived in Church Road but no numbers stated on census. They were living in Britten Street and Thomas was a clerk. Thomas Owen was still a letter carrier in 1901, but no longer living in Church Road. He was a boarder at 1 no. 2, Court, Hill Street, but his wife was not with him. He died in 1906. In 1871 and 1881 Walter W., his wife and their daughter, Mary E., were living in Margaret Place, Queen Street, Redditch. In 1871Walter was a needle finisher, and in 1881 he was a warehouseman. It is probable that he was the ‘Walter Powell’ in the Bromsgrove Workhouse in 1901 and 1911 described as a widower aged 65, born in Redditch and a former needle polisher/finisher. Curiously, Mary A. Powell was living at 32, Oakley Road, Redditch and described as married and living on her own means. At: Unknown Church Road In 1891 | Was Alfred Shrimpton Age: 59 Born: Redditch Worcestershire | Trading as: Notes: Alfred’s wife was Clara, who was 45 and born in Alcester, Warwickshire. Miriam Moor, aged 15, and born in Church Lench, Worcestershire was their servant. Clara was Alfred’s second wife. Mary Catherine died in 1884, and Alfred married Clara Fourt in 1887. Alfred had several children including Alfred E. who was born in 1861. Although in 1891 Alfred did not give his occupation., in 1871 and 1881 he was a needle manufacturer living in William Street and then at 16, Bromsgrove Road. The Post Office Directory of Worcestershire, 1876 and Kelly’s Directory of Worcestershire, 1892 listed Alfred Shrimpton & Son as a manufacturer of needles and fish hooks at Britannia Works, William Street. In 1891 it was Alfred E. who was the needle manufacturer living in William Street. His father died 30th March 1892 and classed as retired Needle Manufacturer. Source of data: AW – Census |

Richard William was aged 23, single, born in Rugby, Warwickshire, and a clerk in the Post Office. Mary W. was single, aged 26 and born in Rugby. The visitor was William Bevan, William Webb’s nephew. He was 16, single, and born in Bromsgrove. (The Church Road Post Office was built in 1888.) On the 1881 census William was married to Dorinda and they lived 20 William Street and William was classed as Inspector of Mail Apprentices. On the 1901 census William was now a widower and lived Church Street, Echington, Worcs., classed as Retired Postmaster. It is possible that the two Alfreds were the same person. His wife was Mary Hannah, aged 34 and born in Willenhall, Staffordshire. They had been married 5 years. At: Unknown Church Road In 1901 | Was Richard Beal Age: 44 Born: Blockley, Worcestershire | Trading as: Inspector of Police Notes: His wife, Charlotte (Perkins) was 41 and born in Acocks Green. Their daughter, Hilda, was 14 and born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. (The Church Road Police Station was built in 1898.) Inspector Beal had been in Redditch since 1900, and in 1901 he moved to Acocks Green to act as the newly appointed Superintendent of the Yardley Division. He was replaced by Inspector Hayes from Worcester (The Worcestershire Chronicle, 6 July, 1901). In 1891 Richard Beal was a police sergeant, and the family lived in Kings Norton.
