(On the 1891 census the enumerator stopped here in Red Lion Street before going on to 14 Alcester Street) In the 1888 Kelly’s Directory James Ainge, Bootmaker was at this address.

In the 1924 Kelly’s Directory Alfred was a Salt Dealer at 20 Red Lion Street. (Alfred was a well known Redditch character and he was nick-named “Salty Birch”. “He used to take his horse and cart to Stoke Prior where he collected salt in big blocks and sell them to the local shopkeepers”-taken from Old Redditch Voices-with permission from Anne Bradford) Alfred Birch died in 1930
