On the 1871 census William was living with his mother Mary in Church Green South, Redditch. I the 1873 Littlebury’s Gazetteer and Directory of Worcestershire a Mrs. Mary Smith, Grocer, Provision Dealer and Ginger Beer Manufacturer was at 3 Market Place and this would have been William’s mother. William E. Smith died in 1926
