According to 1924 Kelly’s Directory an Edwin Smallwood endowed £5,000 to the Smallwood Hospital and his brother William endowed the rest. The hospital was erected in 1895 at a cost of £22,000. Edwin died 16th July 1892 and was classed as a Gentleman.
