In the 1924 Kelly’s Directory Alfred was a Salt Dealer at 20 Red Lion Street. (Alfred was a well known Redditch character and he was nick-named “Salty Birch”. “He used to take his horse and cart to Stoke Prior where he collected salt in big blocks and sell them to the local shopkeepers”-taken from Old Redditch Voices-with permission from Anne Bradford) Alfred Birch died in 1930
